About Scott “Spiderman” Mulholland
Bio and Experience
Scott “Spiderman” Mulholland was enlisted into the United States Marine Corps prior to completing the 11th grade in 1979. While simultaneously serving his country, he finished two years of high school in one year and graduated from Los Angeles Adult Community College where he received his high school diploma. He graduated fourth in his class from Marine Corps Sniper School, served as an instructor and graduated as an officer of the Provost Marshal in the Philippines in 1980.
After leaving the United States Marine Corps, Mr. Mulholland spent over 25 years as a business owner in the waterproofing, restoration and construction industry. His education and training is extensive and focuses on quality control, forensic studies, moisture engineering, and building envelope science and failure analysis. Prior to becoming a full time consultant, Mr. Mulholland held, and still holds, multiple licenses and certifications including a State Certified General Contractor license and has performed full-scale waterproofing and restoration services for residential, commercial and high-rise buildings for over two and a half decades.
US Building Consultants, Inc. (USBCI), Mr. Mulholland’s flagship company, was founded in Gainesville, Florida in 2003. As the CEO of the company, he provides water intrusion analysis, building envelope commissioning, third party construction oversight, and mold assessment services. Additionally, USBCI also offers engineering services to clients for any and all construction-related issues.
In 2005, Mr. Mulholland recognized the magnitude of litigation developers, design professionals and contractors, and those who insure them were experiencing. Realizing that he had successfully overseen three billion dollars in construction without even one building failure, he was inspired to form a coalition of construction specialists who would form the foundation of the Building Envelope Science Institute (BESI). BESI quickly became the vehicle used to accomplish the vision for the building science industry.
By 2008, the Chinese defective drywall issue began to arise within the construction industry, and in 2009 BESI saw an opportunity in a desperate economy to launch its vision on the coattails of what would become known as one of the biggest environmental disasters in the U.S. housing industry. It was essential for construction professionals to have the tools at hand to protect themselves from the litigation that would result from the Chinese drywall epidemic. The Institute and its members quickly secured the first national protocols for inspection and remediation of Chinese drywall and pushed for a national warranty collaboration for those affected by the crisis.
Having 30 years of experience behind him, Mr. Mulholland and the professionals brought together under the umbrella of BESI have launched a national effort to help developers, building owners, construction companies, and their insurers reduce building envelope challenges through the use of training, seminars and support. The vision of the Institute is to develop training and certification programs for all aspects of building envelope construction and science. BESI recently launched the Building Envelope Training and Certification Program, becoming a valuable resource for those in the construction industry. It provides a national network for professionals with common goals and business expertise. One of its key objectives is to convey to contractors and design professionals the Top 100 Most Deadly Sins in construction and use that knowledge to combat and reduce the threat of litigation, by implementing state of the art CSI Protocols.
